MP3 of the Day

Little Sound Disk Jockey (LSDJ) was a homebrewed cartridge for the Nintendo Game Boy that enabled the user to sequence and program music on the original Game Boy. The sequencer of the LSDJ had a very open structure. It was designed to leave all the musical possibilities of the Game Boy in the hands of the user. The system had a slight learning curve, but when learned, it was possible to transcribe a complete Bach piece featuring gameboy sounds in no time at all. Today we have PSYCHIC EMPEROR covering the Misfits' Attitude live on KXLU in Los Angeles. The synth, drums, and bass are all being played on a single Nintendo Game Boy running LSDJ.

Today we have a new song by BISHOP ALLEN called The Chinatown Bus from their brand new album, The Broken String. Is it just me, or does it sound like Bishop Allen has been listening to a lot of Simon & Garfunkel this time around?

On this day in 1975, Sonny and Cher divorced. After scoring several hit records in the 1960s, the couple launched a hit comedy variety show that ran from 1971 until their divorce. After the split, both Sonny and Cher tried and failed to launch solo comedy-variety shows. Today we have LUNA covering the Beat Happening classic Indian Summer.

On this perfect day in 1966, 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' was released. The film, based on a play by Edward Albee, starred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. With no ratings system yet in place in 1966, and plenty of adult content in the film, Warner Bros. agreed to only admit viewers over 18. Today we have This Friendship Of Ours by THIS PERFECT DAY. Happy Friday!

CYNDI LAUPER was born on this day in 1953. Raised by her mother, a waitress, in Queens, NY, Lauper began her career singing with cover bands on Long Island. She released her debut album, She's So Unusual, in 1983 (at age 30) and became the first female artist in rock history to score four Top 10 singles off a debut. She received five Grammy nominations and won the Grammy for Best New Artist that same year. Today we have a live version of Money Changes Everything from She's So Unusual (a record I actually still love).

Tullycraft in a television commercial?

It was brought to my attention a little over a week ago that the Tullycraft song "Sweet" was being used in a television commercial for Wienerschnitzel. I found this very shocking because I knew nothing about these ads. We hadn't been contacted by Wienerschnitzel or any agency representing them. After a little research, it was discovered that the record label that had re-issued our first album "Old Traditions, New Standards" had licensed the song without asking our permission or even contacting us about it. Ultimately, I guess this is my fault. When HARRIET RECORDS went under and we were approached about re-issuing "Old Traditions, New Standards," I thought... "sure!" I didn't anticipate being told: "Read your contract. We don't have to ask your permission to license your songs." I guess I thought that the indie world was different somehow. I assumed that we didn't practice business like the ugly major labels. More than anything, I hate being disappointed by people who I thought were my friends. - Sean

On this day in 1969 the television country-western variety show Hee Haw debuted. Hosted by country singers Roy Clark and Buck Owens, the program featured top country musicians and wacky stunts, jokes, and hijinks. The show was a hit with audiences, but CBS deciding the show's hick country focus wasn't appropriate for the network's image, and dropped it after only two seasons. The program became highly successful in syndication, and ran until 1992. Today we have Spinning And Scratching by LOVE IS ALL. Happy Friday!
