MP3 of the Day

On February 28th, 1995, TULLYCRAFT played their very first show at a small club in Seattle called ReBar. Also on the bill that night were the bands Incredible Force of Junior and Sno*boy. There weren't many people at the show that evening, but among them was Jeff Smith. At the time, Jeff wrote a zine called Feminist Baseball, and he actually wrote a review of the show (see review above). Ironically, Chris (from IFOJ) and Harold (from Sno*boy) would both eventually join Tullycraft. Chris is still in the band. Today we have a live recording of the song Mental Obsession from that fateful night. Happy Friday!

On this day in 1878, Thomas Edison patented the phonograph. He had developed the machine the previous year, using needles to read tin cylinders. The first song recorded on the phonograph was "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Somehow this seems appropriate considering the The Music Tapes' album Clouds and Tornadoes was recorded using antique instruments with a 1930s Webster Chicago Wire Recorder. Don't miss The Music Tapes, Brian Dewan and Nana Grizol TONIGHT at The Vera Project in Seattle. The show is all ages. Today we have the song Motion In The Ocean by NANA GRIZOL from their awesome album Love It Love It.

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1984, the movie Footloose was released in the US. The film told the story of Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon) who moves to a small town where the town government has banned dancing and rock music. Ren and his classmates want to have a senior prom with music and dancing. So... they must figure out a way to get around the town's strict law. Apparently, the movie was loosely based on events that took place in the tiny, rural farming community of Elmore City, Oklahoma. A while back, Paramount Pictures announced plans to film a remake of Footloose starring Zac Efron (High School Musical) as Ren McCormack. The Footloose remake is scheduled to start shooting in the Spring of 2009. Today we have the song Dance and Forget by the Swedish band DANCE AND FORGET.

Almost four months later he died of starvation near the Denali National Park and Preserve. Inspired by the details of McCandless' story, author Jon Krakauer wrote a 1996 book, and in 2007 Sean Penn directed a film about this life. Both were titled Into the Wild. MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1961, the film The Misfits was released. The movie had all the right ingredients to become a truly great western: director - John Huston, screenwriter - Arthur Miller and it stared Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, and Montgomery Clift. Yet when it opened, the reviews were mixed, and the public largely ignored it. Although, in the years to come, The Misfits would find a more appreciative audience, in part because the film was the swan song for Gable and Monroe, who both died shortly after it was released. The film was a western that was in many ways ahead of its time. It was a dark movie that America found increasingly relevant. It's message of alienation and a longing for escape to the pre-modern world of the old west found a wider audience during the turbulent 1960s and '70s. Today we have the song Heroes And Villains by THE GALACTIC HEROES.
