On this day in 1909, American explorer Robert Peary accomplished his dream, when he and his assistant Matthew Henson, reached what they determined to be the North Pole. Decades after Peary's death, however, navigational errors in his travel log surfaced, placing the expedition in all probability 30 miles short of the precise North Pole.
