MP3 of the Day

In a game where the lead shifted back and forth repeatedly, the 49ers took over the ball trailing 27-21 and marched down to the 6-yard line with 58 seconds left on the clock. When Joe Montana took the snap, the play was intended to be a pass to wide receiver Freddie Solomon, but at the last moment, Montana threw a very high pass to the back of the end zone. 49ers receiver Dwight Clark made a leaping grab from the back of the end zone with 51 seconds left in the game."The Catch," as it has become to be known, was the winning score in the January 10, 1982 NFC Championship American football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. A photograph of the catch, with Clark at the height of his leap and Everson Walls reaching out to try and block the ball, was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated the following week. Today we have Wait by THE CATCH from their album Get Cool.

THE EAMES ERA are a resilient bunch. They've survived two hurricanes and a serious car accident near their hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The band members were relatively unscathed considering the violence of the wreck, but singer Ashlin Phillips needed several stitches in her face and guitarist Ted Joyner underwent surgery for his broken arm. Today we've got the hand-clap sing-a-long, Dear Gabby from their new album Heroes And Sheroes.

SPORTSGUITAR was a Swiss band with a lineup rotating around songwriter Oliver Obert and guitarist Roland Saum. Their second album, Married, 3 Kids, marked their Matador debut following their 1994 debut on Derivative (a Canadian label). Of that debut, Oliver said, "We wrote and sang all the songs in English 'cause Swiss German is no good for rock-y lyrics and German is as hard for us to speak as English. When we finished recording we thought it sounded as good as any of our favorite bands." Today's song, Very Weird is from their 2nd album, Married, 3 Kids.

Formed by Martin Whitehead (Subway Records) in 1985 in Bristol, England, THE FLATMATES started out playing Ramones covers. They eventually wrote enough original material to put a full set together and landed an opening slot for The Wedding Present (on only their second gig). The band went on to release six seven inch singles, and appeared on a number of compilations between 1986 - 89. Unfortunately, they disbanded before recording a proper full length album. Today's song is called Tell Me Why.

Sound Magazine was the third album from THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY. It was released in August of 1971, and many consider it to be their best record. It was recorded at the famed Western Recorders (Studio 2) in Los Angeles. The project enlisted some of the most impressive studio musicians of the day, including Larry Knechtel and Hal Blaine (both played on The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds). Sound Magazine included a number of standout songs including: You Don't Have to Tell Me, Echo Valley 2-6809, One Night Stand, and the chart topping I Woke Up In Love This Morning. But today's song, Summer Days, is my favorite on the album.

Mason bees rule!

I assume most of you have heard about bees being in trouble. Well, you can help! There's most likely a beneficial pollinator in your area called the mason bee. These non-stinging bees looks like large, blue flies, but they're actually a bee with a really cool reproductive strategy. The female finds holes in wood to lay her eggs. When she finds the right sized hole, she lays an egg, deposits some pollen for the newly hatched bee to eat, and then walls the whole thing off with a thin mud wall. You can help her out by providing mason bee houses in which she can lay her eggs. You can either buy these houses at fancier nurseries or Audubon centers, or you can make your own.

Viva la bee!

MP3 of the Day

Hey, It's Monday! Coincidentally, on this day in 1966 "Monday, Monday," by the Mamas and the Papas, topped the charts. This was a Billboard first for a musical quartet that included two men and two women. Almost all previous groups that topped the charts were single-sex groups, like The Supremes and The Chiffons, or The Beatles and The Beach Boys. A few male groups sported a token woman singer (like Ruby and the Romantics), but the Mamas and the Papas were the first group to feature fully balanced co-ed vocals. Although, most people suspected that the Mamas and the Papas were actually robots in disguise, so their genders were overlooked. Knowing this, it only seemed appropriate that we post, Get Rid by the London based band, ROBOTS IN DISGUISE. This one's for you robotic Mama Cass!

With their combination of 50's teen pop and cheerleader stage presence, JUNIOR VARSITY were easily one of the most entertaining live bands of the late 90's. Every show was a pep rally for this Houston based "frat-hop" trio. Between 1995-2001, Junior Varsity released three singles, two split singles, and one full length album. Today's song, Dance, Franny, Dance is from their one LP Bam Bam Bam! released in 2000 on Peek-A-Boo Records.

TULLYCRAFT TUESDAY

Rachel Sweet was a minor teen-pop sensation in the late 70's and early 80's. In 1978, at the age of 16 she signed a record deal with Stiff Records in England. After a major publicity push she had only produced one UK Top 40 hit. She was dropped from Stiff and signed a new contract with CBS/Columbia in the US. In 1981 her first CBS/Columbia album was released. Her duet with Rex Smith, a remake of Everlasting Love, was a US Top 40 hit, but the album failed to achieve the commercial success CBS/Columbia was hoping for. Rachel was eventually dropped from her 2nd label and her run as a "Teen Queen" was over. Many, Many years later I was reading about Rachel Sweet and I saw these photos. They seemed very awkward. To me it almost looked like it could have been a "Win A Date With Rachel Sweet Contest." With that in mind, I wrote the SIX CENTS AND NATALIE song My Date With Rachel Sweet. A couple years after that Marc Pattini and his band KISSWHISTLE recorded a cover of the song, and I honestly think that their version of My Date With Rachel Sweet is better than mine.
