MP3 of the Day

If you live in Seattle you may have heard the MS LED song, Up To The Old Tricks on our local radio station KEXP. But if you don't, you might not have heard the new single by this Pacific NW band. Be warned... it's pretty catchy!

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1966, The Beatles played their final tour date, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The band gave up touring and spent the rest of their time together recording music in the studio. The Beatles broke up in 1970. FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS have obviously picked-up the the Beatle's torch. Check out this live version of The Most Beautiful Girl In The Room recorded this past year.

Happy Birthday Jeff!

Tullycraft drummer Jeff Fell and actor Paul Reubens both share birthdays today (Aug 27th), and that's not all they have in common. In 2002 Paul Reubens was the voice of Jet the Bubble in the Adult Swim cartoon 'The Groovenians', and when Jeff lived in Bellingham he was in a band called Jet the Bubble. They released one cassette and played a number of house parties around town. Today we have Happy Birthday by ALTERED IMAGES.

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1990, Sinéad O'Connor was scheduled to perform at the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. The practice of the venue was to play a recording of the American National Anthem before the show began. O'Connor refused to go on if the anthem was played. Venue officials omitted the anthem, and O'Connor performed, but later they banned her from ever playing the Center again. O'Connor said that she "will not go on stage after the national anthem of a country which imposes censorship on artists. It's hypocritical and racist." The incident made tabloid headlines and O'Connor came in for heavy criticism. Frank Sinatra, who performed at the Center the next night, said he wished he could "kick her in the ass." Today we have the song, Troy from Sinéad's debut album The Lion And The Cobra. Happy Friday!

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1814, first lady Dolley Madison saved a portrait of George Washington from being looted by British troops during the war of 1812. President James Madison had left the White House on August 22 to meet with his generals on the battlefield, as British troops threatened to enter the capitol. Before leaving, he asked Dolley to gather important state papers and be prepared to abandon the White House at any moment. The next day, as British troops gathered in the distance, she decided to abandon the couple's personal belongings and save a full-length portrait of former president and national icon George Washington from desecration by British soldiers. Since the painting was screwed to the wall she ordered the frame to be broken and the canvas pulled out and rolled up. The task complete, Dolley left the White House and found her husband at their predetermined meeting place in the middle of a thunderstorm. Although the Madisons were able to return to Washington only three days later when British troops had moved on, it was not until 1817 that newly elected President James Monroe was able to move back into the reconstructed White House. British troops had set fire to the building. Today we have How Come You're Such A Hit With The Boys, Jane? by DOLLY MIXTURE.

Today we have the song, Porn Shoes by THE FRENCH from the album Local Information. In 2003 Darren Hayman formed The French after his other band Hefner broke-up. Local Information, was released on Too Pure. The album's release was followed by a legal dispute between Hayman and the label. Currently, Hayman is looking to re-release Local Information and possibly new material on his own label.

The Wizard of Oz premiered in New York City at Loew's Capitol Theater on this day in 1939. The movie opened nationally on August 25, 1939. The film grossed approximately $3 million against production/distribution costs of $3.8 million in its initial release. It did not show a profit until a 1949 re-release earned an additional $1.5 million. Today we have the song Shim Sham by IMPERIAL TEEN from their new album, The Hair the TV the Baby and the Band. MP3 of the Day

ELVIS PRESLEY died 30 years ago today in Memphis, Tennessee and with his passing, 1977 truly became the year that punk broke. Elvis was 42. Doctors said he died of a heart attack, largely brought on by his addiction to prescription barbiturates. Also on this day in 1985, the last episode of the television show Dukes of Hazzard aired, concluding a successful five-year run. Aside from Bo (John Schneider), Luke (Tom Wopat), and Daisy (Catherine Bach), the star of the show was the General Lee.... a 1969 Dodge Charger. Today we have Suspicious Minds recorded live at Madison Square Gardens in 1972 by the King himself.

MP3 of the Day

Shelflife Records has always been very hit and miss with me. When people refer to this little label as legendary I can't help but roll my eyes. I love the Free Loan Investments and Language Of Flowers releases, but let's be honest... Shelflife has put out some less than memorable stuff. I do however, quite like everything I've heard by A SMILE AND A RIBBON. Today we have Book Cover by this young Swedish band. Happy Wednesday!

The BEST band at the Athens Popfest

The members of Tullycraft took vote and we all agreed that BLACK KIDS were the best band at this year's Athens Popfest (with DARREN HANLON and FISHBOY a close second). They completely owned the stage at Little Kings on Saturday afternoon. We have a song by them today called: I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You, but unfortunately it doesn't come remotely close to capturing the sound and energy they put out live. I'm begging this band to find their way to a better studio and ditch the cheesy reverb next time. With a proper recording, Black kids would be an unstoppable force. They are amazing!

TULLYCRAFT TUESDAY

TULLYCRAFT are flying to Georgia Thursday morning for the Athens Popfest. We are going to be playing at the 40 Watt on Friday (Aug. 10th). Here's the deal..... the first person to find Jenny at the show on Friday night and say the magic words: "a haunted castle's pay phone rings" will win the Tullycraft gift pack! The gift pack will have a lot of stuff, including some rare vinyl. To be fair, this must take place the night of the show inside the 40 Watt. Stopping Jenny on the street on Thursday night won't count... sorry. Good luck to all! See you in Athens.

MP3 of the Day

Martin Sheen was born Ramon Estevez on this day in 1940. The son of a Spanish immigrant, Sheen was the seventh of 10 children. He moved to New York after high school and began pursuing an acting career while working as a janitor. His film and TV career has included numerous political roles, including one of my very favorites as fictional U.S. president Josiah Bartlett on the TV series The West Wing. Previously, he played Robert Kennedy in the TV movie The Missiles of October (1974), John F. Kennedy in the miniseries Kennedy (1983), and the White House chief of staff in The American President (1995). Sheen is also the father of Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen. Today we have a live version of When The President Talks To God by BRIGHT EYES. Happy Friday!
