Los Campesinos! / Tullycraft show?

It was just brought to my attention that there was an ad printed in one of the Seattle weekly papers that shows Tullycraft opening for Los Campesinos! tomorrow night. As much fun as this show would be, Tullycraft guitarist, Chris, is currently in Sweden. I’m not sure how this happened. I did speak with Gareth from Los Campesinos! about the possibility of playing together a couple months back, but we never followed up with it, and I was never contacted by the club. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to play this show… sorry.

Former Pavement frontman, Stephen Malkmus was born on this day in Santa Monica, CA in 1966. Stephen was raised in Stockton, CA and graduated from high school in Carpinteria, CA at Cate School, a prestigious boarding school. Crayon, the band that Jeff & I used to be in, had a chance to open for Pavement on the Slanted & Enchanted tour back in 1992. They were all friendly fellows... especially Gary Young. Actually, just yesterday Crayon was mentioned on the All Music Blog. I can't believe how long ago that was! Today we have a live recording of In The Mouth A Desert by PAVEMENT. Happy Friday!

Today, THE SMITTENS ask: "why don't good bands ever come to play (in Vermont)?" in the song I Hate Vermont. I'm not sure anyone would ever accuse Tullycraft of being a "good band" but still, we are coming to play in Winooski, VT on Wed June 11th. If you live anywhere near there, you are welcome to join us for the evening.

The film It Came from Outer Space was released on this day in 1953. Based on a Ray Bradbury story, the movie was the first science fiction film to be screened in 3-D. Two days later, Walt Disney released the first 3-D cartoon, Melody. Although various 3-D formats had been around for decades, industry interest peaked in the early 1950s, as studios sought ways to differentiate movies from the new medium of television. Today we have the song Things I Used To Know by STEVE GOLDBERG and the ARCH ENEMIES. You can catch Steve Goldberg at this year's NYC Popfest.

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1962, Marilyn Monroe sang a sultry rendition of the traditional "Happy Birthday" with "Mr. President" inserted at a celebration for then-President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Afterwards, President Kennedy came on stage and joked about the song, saying, "I can now retire from politics after having had Happy Birthday sung to me in such a sweet, wholesome way," alluding to Monroe's delivery, her racy dress, and her general image as a sex symbol. The song and Monroe's performance have been remembered for numerous reasons. First, it was one of her last major public appearances (Monroe died August 5, 1962). In addition, there were persistent rumors that President Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe had had an affair, giving Monroe's performance another layer of meaning. I know I posted a song by NANA GRIZOL last week, but their debut album, Love it Love it is just so damn good I'm gonna post another one! Today we have Circles 'Round The Moon by NANA GRIZOL.

SpaghettiOs were introduced on this day in 1965. It is rumored that the original SpaghettiOs recipe was created in Pozzuoli, Italy, around 1884, by a member (or members) of a family who later emigrated to Brooklyn, New York and acquired the name Kirby. A friend of the family, who later became a product developer at Franco-American, is thought to have obtained the recipe. On November 18, 2004, Campbell's announced that they were discontinuing the Franco-American brand. SpaghettiOs are now marketed under the Campbell's name. Today we have the song Lawyers & Truckers by ED'S REDEEMING QUALITIES from the 1991 album It's All Good News. Happy Friday!

Director Amy Heckerling was born on this day in 1954. In addition to directing Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982, Heckerling directed an update of Jane Austen's 1816 novel Emma, titled Clueless in 1995. The film told the story of Cher Horowitz, a good-natured valley girl-type (she actually lived in Beverly Hills and was quite out of her element in a sequence that took place in the valley). Many considered the film a "turn of the century" rarity for its new fashion innovation of plaid, knee-high socks, and pastel colors; and also for its up and coming technology showcasing the wide use of cellular phones and pagers, which in 1995, were mostly used by the rich and not the common folk. Today we have Hello Hello Hi by FROM BUBBLEGUM TO SKY. You can catch From Bubblegum to Sky playing a couple shows with Tullycraft in June (in NYC and Washington, DC).
