On this day in 1949, a twenty-eight year old former sharpshooter in World War II named Howard Unruh left his house for a twelve minute walk around his Camden, New Jersey neighborhood. During his walk he shot people at random with a souvenir Luger and killed 13. He is regarded as one of the first 'lone gunmen' to go on an indiscriminate shooting spree in US history.
