MP3 of the Day

NEW ORDER played in New York City on this day in 1980. They were the opening act for A Certain Ratio. In the New York Rocker, David Fricke wrote of the show: "One could not help but wonder after hearing the tortured Transylvanian majesty of the music they made, about the possibilities for Joy Division had Curtis come to less drastic terms with his demons. But New Order came not to bury Curtis or to praise him, just to let him rest in peace. Of the seven songs they played, none were old numbers. The closest New Order came to eulogizing their fallen comrade was a ghost chant set to synthesizer, bass, melodica, and rhythm machine in which drummer Steve Morris' voice struggled to be understood through the echo. 'I wish you were here with me now,' Morris moaned, bearing the full brunt of its irony since the song from which that line comes, "In A Lonely Place," is actually one of two in the New Order set written with Curtis shortly before his death." Today we have The Village from the Power, Corruption & Lies album released in 1983.
