Late Night with David Letterman premiered on this day in 1982. A hit with college students, the show aired after Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. When Carson retired in 1992, Letterman and rival comic Jay Leno engaged in a heated battle for the coveted host slot. When Letterman was passed over, he left NBC for CBS, where his new program, Late Show with David Letterman, outperformed Leno's show almost every week in its first year. Today we have THE THERMALS playing an acoustic version of their song A Pillar of Salt . Happy Friday!

Do you remember Dave's morning talk show which ran in the summer of '80? I think I must've been one of the few loyal viewers. Imagine the irreverence of "Late Night," only on in the morning, it's a wonder it lasted as many weeks as it did.
