MP3 of the Day
The Beatles recorded their first album, Please Please Me in a single 10-hour session on this day in 1963. The group had recorded the title song in 1962 and seen it rise to No. 2 on the British Top 20 charts in early 1963. By the middle of 1963, hysterical British fans had created the phenomenon known as Beatlemania, which was in full swing by the time the Beatles made their U.S. debut in a tour starting in February 1964. Today we have I Pretend I Know What's Best by WEBBY MOORE from the album Thinking Season.

Besides recording an album in a day, what I find scary about the early Beatles is their gig workload. In this February, besides recording the album, they played 31 shows, one TV show, and a radio broadcast. That was actually a light month for them; throughout 1962 they frequently played as many as 37 shows a month, and of course when they were in Hamburg, they played six hours a day and frequently went and stood in with other bands after they were done.
Oh, and George Harrison turned 20 a couple of weeks after recording. 20.
