Gibson shipped the first Flying V guitar from their factory in Kalamazoo, MI. on this day in 1958. The design was meant to add a more futuristic aspect to Gibson's image, but the model didn't sell well. After the initial launch in 1958, the line was discontinued in 1959. A renewed interest in the Flying V inspired Gibson to reissue the model in 1967. Its design was updated with a bigger, more stylish pickguard, and the original bridge was ditched in favor of the stopbar tail piece more commonly associated with Gibson guitars. The 1967 model is now the standard for the Flying V. K.K. Downing of Judas Priest is famous for playing a 1967 Flying V. THE DONNAS, being big fans of K.K. Downing & Judas Priest, recorded an irony-free cover of Judas Priest's "Livin' After Midnight" for their Turns 21 album. Today we have The Donnas doing Bitchin'/Don't Wait Up For Me.
