Burl Ives died at his home on this day in 1995. Ives was a traveling musician during the Depression. In New York City in 1933, he became a folk singer after meeting up with other musicians, including
Woody Guthrie, who were reviving the genre. Ives recorded many hit songs and also appeared in several films, including
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and
East of Eden. He also narrated the classic TV special
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. In his later years, Ives and his wife Dorothy, lived in a home alongside the water in the small town of Anacortes in Washington State. Today we have
I Felt Your Shape by
THE MICROPHONES (aka Phil Elverum) who grew up in Anacortes.
