MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1970, West Coast Yippies invaded Disneyland “to liberate Minnie Mouse.” Leaflets were distributed beforehand declaring that they would attempt to take over all of Disneyland, but they only managed to infiltrate Tom Sawyers Island. Anaheim police had prepared for thousands of troublemakers and were waiting backstage in riot gear, but only about 300 showed up. After “capturing” Tom Sawyer’s Island, the Yippies marched down Main Street and harassed the Disneyland Marching Band. At that point the police stormed in and attempted to evict the Yippies, who quickly disbursed throughout the park. Disneyland was then closed and emptied; the first time in the park's history. Today we have the song Mousetrap by SOME VELVET SIDEWALK.

The Yippies (Youth International Party), were a group founded in 1967 by Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. Although they captured the attention of the nation, the Yippies were destined to be short-lived. The core of their purpose rested in the creation of anarchy. When they mobilized, they did so illegally because they were not able to obtain demonstration permits. As a result, their illegal demonstrations caught the attention
of the media and were sometimes met with police brutality.
