On this day in 1934,
Producer Samuel Goldwyn purchased the film rights to
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by
L. Frank Baum. The book had originally been published in 1900, and though Baum died in 1919 his widow had agreed to allow another writer to continue the "Oz" series. Goldwyn had intended for
Shirley Temple to play Dorothy in the film, but 17-year-old
Judy Garland got the part instead. The movie was released in 1939 and it made Judy Garland an international star. Today we have the song
Picture Show by
BALLBOY.
