On this day in 1979, Brenda Ann Spencer went on a shooting spree at Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, CA. She used a rifle that she had been given for Christmas by her father. The school's principal and head custodian were both killed and eight children and a police officer sustained wounds. When asked why she had done this, Brenda shrugged and simply replied, "I don't like Mondays, this livens up the day." She was 16 years old. Bob Geldof (from The Boomtown Rats) learned of the shootings after reading a telex report at the Georgia State University campus radio station, WRAS. The fact that Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her full explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays," baffled Geldof and inspired him to write the song: I Don't Like Mondays.
