On this day in 1976, the film
The Bad News Bears was released in the US. The movie starred
Walter Matthau as
Morris Buttermaker, an alcoholic former minor-league baseball player, who becomes the coach of a terrible Little League team called the Bears. It also starred an 11-year-old
Tatum O'Neal as
Amanda Whurlizer, a skilled pitcher who is recruited by Buttermaker. In 2005, a truly awful remake of
The Bad News Bears starring
Billy Bob Thornton was released. Avoid this version if at all possible. Today we have
BRIGHT EYES covering the
Magnetic Fields' classic
Papa Was A Rodeo.

It also stars a dude named Jackie Earl Haley as Kelly Leak. You might be familiar with Haley's more recent role, Rorschach, in Watchmen. That always blows my mind. Rorschach = Kelly Leak.
Jackie Earl Haley also played Moocher in ‘Breaking Away’ (1979) - another one of my favorites.
