On this day in 1966, the film,
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, starring
Elizabeth Taylor and
Richard Burton, received the
Production Code Seal of Approval. It was the first movie containing four-letter words to be approved by the restrictive code. The Production Code was introduced in 1930 by the
Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), an industry association created to avoid government censorship of the movies. The code deeply influenced the kinds of films that were made until the late 1960s, when the standards were revised in response to social change in the United States. In 1968, the code was replaced by the movie ratings system, which greatly expanded the range of subjects and content permissible for film. Today we have the song
Seedy Films by
SOFT CELL.
