On this day in 1946, Howard Hughes piloted an XF-11 prototype reconnaissance airplane on its maiden flight. An oil leak caused the plane to suddenly lose altitude, and it crashed into a house. Howard Hughes was nearly killed in the accident. The Army had originally ordered one hundred XF-11 planes for photo reconnaissance. The order was cancelled, leaving Hughes with only the two prototypes he had designed. Today we have the song The Morning of Our Lives by JONATHAN RICHMAN from The Lost Album (1981).
