On this day in 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio failed to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, which brought his 56 game hitting streak to an end. The streak had captivated the nation for two months (May 15th - July 16th). The 56 game record still stands today, and many believe it will never be broken.
