On this day in 1949, representatives from the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and National Basketball League (NBL) met at the Empire State Building in New York City to finalize a merger. After a damaging three-year battle to win both players and fans, the rival leagues agreed to merge and form a new league called the National Basketball Association (NBA). At that time, the new NBA was made up of 17 teams that represented both small towns and large cities across the country.
