On this day in 2002,
The Mountain Goats released the album,
Tallahassee. After releasing cassettes (and records) on indie labels like Shrimper and Ajax for years,
Tallahassee was the first Mountain Goats album to be released on the much larger British alternative rock label 4AD. It was also the first album to feature an actual "band." Mountain Goats releases prior to this had either been solo cassette recordings by
John Darnielle or higher-quality recordings featuring
Rachel Ware on bass. On
Tallahassee, Darnielle was joined by two past collaborators, and former Nothing Painted Blue members
Peter Hughes and
Franklin Bruno. The album was co-produced, recorded, and mixed by producer
Tony Doogan at Tarbox Studios in Cassadaga, New York.
Michael Ivins of The Flaming Lips assisted. Today we have a
live recording of Peter's
Ring Tone from a
MOUNTAIN GOATS' show in 2003.
