On this day in 1959, twelve nations, including the United States and the Soviet Union, signed the Antarctica Treaty, which banned military activity and mineral mining on that continent. It was the first arms control agreement signed during the Cold War period. To date, forty-six countries have signed the treaty. Experiments and scientific research are currently ongoing by more than 4,000 international scientists in Antarctica. Today we have the song C & F by ANTARCTICA TAKES IT!
