MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1962, Jack Paar shot his final episode of The Tonight Show. Paar had hosted the show since July 1957 (six months after Steve Allen stepped down). Paar was known for his outbursts, which included walking off the set of The Tonight Show on February 11, 1960, to protest network censorship of one of his jokes. Johnny Carson took over as host of the show in October 1962. Today we have, All Of A Sudden by THE BRIGHT LIGHTS from their self titled CD on, 555 Recordings.

TULLYCRAFT TUESDAY

Before Jeff and I were in Tullycraft we were in a band called Crayon. Crayon only released one album called Brick Factory and one of the songs on that album was called "Pedal." On one of the first 7" releases by Tullycraft we included a short techno version of this song as sort of a 'tip of the hat' to our old band. The background vocals on the new version were by Rose Melberg (Tiger Trap & The Softies). A couple years later Rose (Melberg) started a new band called Gaze in Vancouver, B.C. Gaze ended up recording and releasing their own version of the song. Today we have both the TULLYCRAFT cover of Pedal, and the GAZE cover of Pedal. Enjoy!

On this day in 1839 the first recorded appearance of the phrase "O.K." appeared in the Boston Morning Post. It was used as an abbreviation for "oll korrect" (a conscious misspelling of "all correct"). Today we have, Speed Queen by LES MOLIES, which is okay!

The Band That Would Be King

If you have never seen the 1993 Jeff Feuerzeig film, HALF JAPANESE: The Band That Would Be King, you really should. It's any excellent documentary about, arguably, the world's greatest punk rock band. If you have seven free minutes, check out this clip from the movie... it's totally worth watching!

TULLYCRAFT TUESDAY

BOAT played two really great sets at this year's SXSW. The first one at a party on Thursday afternoon, and then again at their showcase on Friday night. Tullycrafter, Jeff Fell sat in on drums on both sets. I think it's safe to say they took Austin by storm. Today we have their cover of Molly's Got a Crush On Us from our album, Disenchanted Hearts Unite.

SXSW Wrap up

Well kids, we're home safe. Austin was a BLAST and no one lost any teeth or fingers. Some excellent surprises occurred when we decided to forego the known favorites and check out a few random, under-attended shows. I think we all have returned home with lists of new bands we like, and want to know more about. Mine include Prototypes from Paris, Malajube from Montreal, and Turbo Fruits from Tennessee. Thanks to everyone who made this trip happen! Especially Curt, Mark & Liz Riley!!

MP3 of the Day

THE FRATELLIS played a number of times at this year's SXSW. The machine is certainly behind them right now. At this performance I noticed Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) hovering above them and curiously watching. Today we have Whistle For The Choir from their much hyped album, Costello Music.

Ladies Love Cool Jeff

It's been a constant lady-fest for Mr. Jeff Fell. These gals chased him down and demanded that a photo be taken of this hot foursome. We'll see how many digits he gets after tonight's show!

SXSW, Day 2

Thursday was incredible, we saw Tom Brosseau, Northern State, The Fratellis, Chromeo, Cut Your Hands Off, Malajube, Sondre Lerche, and loads more. Highlights; sidewalk Jagermiester shots, free Saucony shoes for most of the band, and a 3am strip poker hotel afterparty. Today's MP3 is: Can You Feel It? by THE APPLES IN STEREO, from their new album New Magnetic Wonder. You can catch THE APPLES at the SXSW 'Mess With Texas' Party at Red Seven tomorrow (Sat). They are playing at 5PM.

They are playing at the Music by the Slice Party (at Home Slice Pizza) here in Austin on Friday afternoon. Here's their tune A Heart & a Hand & the Love for a Band.

Roundhouse Hitler

Last night I dreamt I was in a preview for a new film about the secret, heinous, deeds of a young (pre-politics) Adolf Hitler. A fresh-faced Adolf was lurking around my front door (spooky light, obscured by thin curtains, I assume he was going to murder me) so I ran out the back and when he chased me I tried a dramatic roundhouse kick to his gut. Which got me reminiscing... when Jeff Fell was in Bellingham, didn't he have a band called "Roundhouse Hitler?"

MP3 of the Day

The 2007 SXSW Sub Pop showcase includes: Maps & Atlases, Tiny Vipers, Oxford Collapse, Kinski and headlining the evening will be a comedy set by King Of Queens sitcom star PATTON OSWALT. We actually met Patton at the Robert Pollard show last year and he was very nice. Today we have a preview of what you might hear if you attend his show.
Look out Austin! Tullycraft guitarist, Chris Munford is coming back to SXSW! Last year he launched bottle rockets from the street while Magic Marker head honcho, Curt Kentner begged him to stop.

Thursday, March 08, 2007

Happy Birthday, Chris!

That's right! Old man Munford is one year older today. How old, you say? Old enough to be president, but not quite AARP. Have a good one, Chris!

STRAWBERRY STORY formed in Darlington, England in the late 80's. They never recorded a proper album but did release songs on magazine flexis, compilation cassettes and a few seven inch singles.
