MP3 of the Day

I've never been a big fan of STARS. I think their production is boring and their song writing is generally less than stellar. This song is the exception. This is the demo version of The Very Thing and it's terrific! Too bad the album version was a complete disappointment.

MP3 of the Day

Even though JARVIS COCKER shamelessly steals from Tommy James & the Shondells on his new song Black Magic, I still love it. He's going to be in Seattle on Monday, and I'm not going to miss it! Also, he's going to be on David Letterman tonight!

MP3 of the Day

On occasion you'll find some fairly obscure indie pop gems posted here. Over the years we've been sent a lot of records. Today we have a song I'm pretty sure you'll have a hard time finding any place else, Kinda Sorta Maybe by THE STRAWBERRY JAMS.

In 1951, Cuban composer and violinist Enrique Jorrín introduced the cha-cha-chá to Cuban dance floors while playing with Orquesta América. According to Jorrín, the sound made by the shoes of the dancers on the floor sounded like "cha-cha-cha", while they tried to follow the new rhythm that, at the beginning, was simply called "mambo-rumba". His influence is felt to this day. Today we have Dancing Under Influence by the band BEDROOM EYES, from the small northern Swedish town of Östersund.

MP3 of the Day

I have to think that the new VELCRO STARS' song All That I Do is a spoof on the song, "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" by Bryan Adams. If it is, I applaud them... it's brilliant. If it's not, it might be some of the worst song writing ever!

MP3 of the Day

I saw some terrible band called The Feeling on VH1 yesterday and it reminded me that there was a band called THE FEELINGS a few years back that were actually pretty good. Today we have a song by them called: Peculiar Girl. Enjoy!

MP3 of the Day

Before the advent of the compact disc, flexi discs were included with many music magazines. A flexi disc could be molded with music and bound into the text with a perforated seam, at very little cost and without any requirement for a hard binding. One problem with using the thinner vinyl was that the stylus's weight, combined with the flexi disc's lack of weight, would sometimes cause the disc to stop spinning on the turntable and become held in place by the stylus. For this reason, most flexi discs had a spot on the face of the disc for a coin, or other small, flat, weighted object to enforce the circular motion. If the turntable's surface is not completely flat, it is recommended that the flexi disc be placed on top of a full sized record. Today we have the BEAT HAPPENING 53rd & 3rd flexi of Honey Pot / Don't Mix The Colors.

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1972, the fifth of the six U.S. lunar landing missions (Apollo 16) was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. In keeping with this, today's song is called: Silver Moon Boots by MUTT RAMON. It's really good. Check it out!

MP3 of the Day

In my younger days, believe it or not, I was actually a fan of the early PETER GABRIEL albums. I didn't care so much for 'So' and I'm not too familiar with the music he made after that. Although recently, I heard his cover of the Magnetic Fields song Book of Love. It may be a little sappy and the strings are a bit over the top, but I have to admit, I don't totally hate it. It may be the fact that I know he recorded three solid albums ages ago, or it could just be that I like the original song so much. What do you think?

MP3 of the Day

I was going through my big box of old tapes the other day, and I came across the SNO*BOY cassette. This band featured former Tullycraft guitarist Harold Hollingsworth. To my knowledge, they only released one 7" single and this song, Mow Your Lawn wasn't on it. There are so many lost gems on tape! Maybe we should have an entire week of cassette only releases?

Empire Falls was a 2001 novel written by Richard Russo. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2002. The novel was made into a two part mini-series that aired on HBO in 2005, starring Helen Hunt, Ed Harris, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Paul Newman. It won a Golden Globe for Best Mini-Series in 2006. I don't think there's any connection, but today we have, Empire Falls by the Australian band, PLASTIC PALACE ALICE.

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1909, American explorer Robert Peary accomplished his dream, when he and his assistant Matthew Henson, reached what they determined to be the North Pole. Decades after Peary's death, however, navigational errors in his travel log surfaced, placing the expedition in all probability 30 miles short of the precise North Pole. Today we have Smiles On Pretty Faces by the Oxford duo LIFE WITH BEARS.

TULLYCRAFT TUESDAY

Today we have a TULLYCRAFT rarity. While visiting a radio station in Irvine, California, we attempted to cover the New Order classic Loveless, live on the air. This was the one (and only) occasion we ever played this song. It was probably for the best.

MP3 of the Day

In 1999, Pasadena, California friends Kenji Baugham, Padgett Arango and Margaret Brunjes recorded and released a wonderful CD under the name FORMERLY KNOWN AS OEDIPUSAURUS REX on Chucklehound Records. The album presented a wide variety of music ranging from folky songs to lo-fi synth-pop gems. Today we have, Let Go / Ollie The Otter, from this self titled album. If you're able to track down this CD, it's really worth it!
