Both bands recorded and released versions of the song (The Go-Go's in 1981 and Fun Boy Three in 1983). NEW ORDER played in New York City on this day in 1980. They were the opening act for A Certain Ratio. In the New York Rocker, David Fricke wrote of the show: "One could not help but wonder after hearing the tortured Transylvanian majesty of the music they made, about the possibilities for Joy Division had Curtis come to less drastic terms with his demons. But New Order came not to bury Curtis or to praise him, just to let him rest in peace. Of the seven songs they played, none were old numbers. The closest New Order came to eulogizing their fallen comrade was a ghost chant set to synthesizer, bass, melodica, and rhythm machine in which drummer Steve Morris' voice struggled to be understood through the echo. 'I wish you were here with me now,' Morris moaned, bearing the full brunt of its irony since the song from which that line comes, "In A Lonely Place," is actually one of two in the New Order set written with Curtis shortly before his death." We had a crazy night last night. After their amazing show here in Seattle - Marty, Louie and Mark (from The Lucksmiths) stayed over with Liz and I. Needless to say, we were up a bit too late. Hey! "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits was the No. 1 song on the Billboard charts on this day in 1985. Two years later the son of Dire Straits drummer, Terry Williams - Hue Williams would form the band THE POOH STICKS with producer/songwriter Steve Gregory. The pair would invent a fictitious line-up which included Trudi Tangerine (tambourine/piano), Paul (guitar), Stephanie Bass-Drum(drums) and Alison (bass). The real-life Amelia Fletcher (Talulah Gosh & Heavenly) served as guest vocalist on two of their albums (The Great White Wonder and Million Seller). Jenkins completed the world's first 24-hour solo run, driving 2,710 miles nonstop in a single day. His stock Pierce Arrow V-12 averaged 112.94mph. Has BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN been hanging out with Stephin Merritt? Either that, or Clarence Clemons has been spinning The Magnetic Fields on the tour bus. My friend Roshan sent me this new song by the Boss called Girls In Their Summer Clothes, and I was floored by how much it sounded like a Stephin Merritt song. This could have been on The Charm of the Highway Strip.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! premiered on this day (September 13) in 1969. Twenty-five episodes were produced (seventeen in 1969 - 1970 and eight more in 1970 - 1971). The show was the result of CBS and Hanna-Barbera's plans to create a non-violent Saturday morning program which would appease the parent watchgroups that had protested the superhero-based programs of the mid-1960s. A popular theory holds that the creators of Scooby-Doo meant for the main characters to represent five different liberal arts colleges. Daphne was said to represent Mount Holyoke, Velma - Smith College, Fred - Amherst College, Shaggy - Hampshire College, and Scooby was said to be UMass Amherst. Sometimes the obvious just works. Last night the indie-folk superstar DARREN HANLON played here in Seattle. He easily stole the evening with his Australian charm and pinball wizardry. He mixed the showmanship of Jonathan Richman and song writing chops of Billy Bragg. If Russell Crowe himself had been there, he wouldn't have been able to compete. The psychedelic-indiepop mini-orchestra known as RED PONY CLOCK has an ever changing/growing line-up. At last count they had 13 members. RPC’s endearingly ramshackle live performances are known throughout the Western US for their tendency to veer from beautiful Beach Boys inspired harmonies to cathartic punkish screamfests, followed by weird dixieland freak-outs - sometimes all in the same song. If you get a chance to catch them live... do. They are fun! Today's song is called Don't Forget Who Your Friends Are, and it's from Red Pony Clock's new album God Made Dirt.

I guess we can add BEN GIBBARD to the list of folks who have covered Beat Happening's Indian Summer. Others include: Luna, The Manhattan Love Suicides and Spiritualized. Honestly, I can't say I'm a huge fan of this version, but I love the song. If you're not familiar with the original... it's a classic!

On this day in 1949, a twenty-eight year old former sharpshooter in World War II named Howard Unruh left his house for a twelve minute walk around his Camden, New Jersey neighborhood. During his walk he shot people at random with a souvenir Luger and killed 13. He is regarded as one of the first 'lone gunmen' to go on an indiscriminate shooting spree in US history. Cross-country trips were no longer considered big news in the late 1920's, but on this day in 1930 Charles Creighton and James Hargis' journey managed to make headlines. The two men from Maplewood, New Jersey, arrived in New York City having completed their 42-day round trip to Los Angeles (7,180 miles) - driving their 1929 Ford Model A entirely in reverse gear. Somehow, Car Trouble by ALL GIRL SUMMER FUN BAND seems like an appropriate MP3 to post today.
