MP3 of the Day

Count Dracula has remained a staple of popular culture for decades. Many songs and films have used the character in their titles including, Brides of Dracula, Dracula's Daughter, and Horror of Dracula. There are an estimated 160 films that feature Dracula in a major role. Today we have Dracula's Wedding by OUTKAST. I love this song!

Since this is also TUESDAY, today you can hear a TULLYCRAFT interview from a recent Regular Guy Radio Podcast.

MP3 of the Day

Halloween is only two days away, so in keeping with the holiday today we have Secret Vampires by BIS. Years ago, Tullycraft played with Bis and we were surprised to find out that they actually knew who we were. We were even more surprised when they said they were familiar with the fanzine Jeff and I put out when we were in the band Crayon. How could this be? They were big stars who hung out with the Beastie Boys! We discovered that they were cool kids, and even though they jet-setted all over the world they kept their head in the underground. Hey! you should also check out the video for their song Starbright Boy. I love the line "Nobody wants indie music anymore, there's too many subcultural divisions between the youth!" Enjoy.

WeePOP! Records is a tiny label in the UK that releases limited edition 3" CD EPs by indiepop artists. They only make a couple hundred copies of each release. Now that's DIY!! But no matter how limited the CDs are, they wouldn’t be worth a damn without great music, and WeePop! delivers. Their latest release is a 4 song mini CD by the St. Louis popsters BUNNYGRUNT. Today we have a song from the The 1000% Hot EP called Where Eagles Dare, Pt 2.

With Halloween less than a week away, somehow it seemed appropriate to have Gerald Casale of DEVO explain the origin the famous yellow chemical-protection suits the band wore during the early Q: Are We Not Men? period, and on their now-legendary Saturday Night Live appearance (which aired in October 1978). And also we have the song Working In A Coal Mine.

The Broadway musical A Chorus Line opened on this day in 1975. The show, which gave a behind-the-scenes look at dancers auditioning for a Broadway show, became the longest-running musical on September 29, 1983, when its 3,389th performance broke the record previously held by Grease. More than 6.5 million people saw the show during its original eight-year run. In October 2006, a revival of A Chorus Line opened on Broadway. Today we have the song Beehive by the band "AWESOME" from their new album Beehive Sessions. "Awesome" features Evan Mosher who played trumpet on the new Tullycraft album.

Fishboy was a black and white comic strip that was written by Scott Goodall and drawn by John Stokes. It appeared in the a British comic book called Buster between 1968 and 1975. The title character was a British boy who was abandoned on a desert island as a baby and survived by learning to breathe underwater and talk to the sea creatures. He also developed webbed fingers and toes which gave him the ability to swim as fast as a car. Today we have Taqueria Girl by the Denton, TX band FISHBOY from their epic album, Albatross: How We Tried And Subsequently Failed To Save Texas With The Power Of Rock And Roll out on HHBTM Records.

I Love Lucy debuted on this day in 1951. The show starred comedian Lucille Ball and her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz. The series became one of the most popular TV situation comedies in history. It was the most-watched show in the United States in four of its six seasons, and was the first to end its run at the top of the ratings (only to be matched by The Andy Griffith Show and Seinfeld). Episodes of I Love Lucy are still syndicated in dozens of languages around the world. Today we have Lucy by THE LOCAL HEROES.

DARREN HAYMAN is one of my favorite songwriters. It's really that simple. Today we have Darren explaining why he avoids using poetic metaphors in his writing and the song, Peppermint Taste by his former band HEFNER. If you're a fan of Darren and all of his musical projects I think you'll enjoy hearing his take on lyrics..... and the song's pretty good too! Happy Friday.

Actor/Director Orson Welles died of a heart attack at age 70 on this day in 1985. Welles made important contributions to the development of film, introducing new camera and sound techniques. His best-known movie, Citizen Kane (1941) is often cited as being one of the most innovative works in the history of film. In 2007 the American Film Institute placed the film at number-one in its list of the 100 greatest U.S. movies of all time. In a recent poll of film directors conducted by the British Film Institute, Citizen Kane was ranked the number one best film of all time. Pretty impressive, considering Welles was only 25 when he made it. Today we have The End by DAVID & THE CITIZENS from their album, Until The Sadness Is Gone.

Recently, Avril Lavigne and her record label were sued by The Rubinoos who claimed that her single "Girlfriend" infringed upon their 1979 hit "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend." Years before this controversy the band LUSH recorded their own version, re-naming the song I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend. (They gave The Rubinoos full credit). If you ask me, Avril's version sounds remarkably similar to the Lush cover.

Songs for Drella was an album written about Andy Warhol by LOU REED and JOHN CALE. The songs are not so much a biography but rather Warhol as experienced through Lou Reed and John Cale's eyes... which is why many of the songs are written from Lou's perseptive and why there is little reference to Warhol's life between 1970-1987. My favorite song on the album is Hello, it's me. It might be one of the best quiet songs Lou Reed has ever written. It's tragic, and it's just about perfect.

On this day in 1863, expressing gratitude for the Union Army's victory at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln announced that the nation will celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on November 26, 1863. To this day, the fourth Thursday of November remains the official Thanksgiving holiday. Today we have Captain Obvious by MACHINE GO BOOM from their album, Thank You Captain Obvious.

Marlborough, N.H. -- Police in New Hampshire are searching for two thieves in a store robbery where they scammed a store owner by pretending they could read his mind before stealing money from his store. The store owner said he believes the men were able to hypnotize him into giving them money. A surveillance tape shows him removing cash from a hollowed-out book before getting more money from the safe. After watching the tape, police said the store owner seemed to have fallen under their spell. "From him telling me, I wouldn't believe it," Detective Steve LaMears said. "Seeing the video, saying he's hypnotized, it makes it a little stronger." Today we have Fun to Pretend by THE DEIRDRES.

The 1998 documentary The Cruise showcased Timothy "Speed" Levitch, an eccentric New York City double-decker tour bus guide. The film unfolded to reveal Timothy's tempetuous love affair with the city. His disarming sincerity and passion for living challenged the audience to live with exuberance and hope, and to seek the beauty in everyday life. Today we have a live version of Undone - The Sweater Song by WEEZER featuring Timothy Levitch dispensing his philosophical musings between verses. This is a great Weezer rarity. Happy October!
