MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1971, DAVID BOWIE released his fourth album, Hunky Dory. Bowie didn't have a record contract when he started recording the album in April 1971, but when RCA Records heard the tapes they signed him to a three-album deal, releasing Hunky Dory two months later. Supported by the single "Changes", the album received good reviews and sold reasonably well when it was released. Today we have the very Velvet Underground inspired Queen Bitch by DAVID BOWIE from the album Hunky Dory.

Remember, the Top Ten Songs of 2008 countdown begins tomorrow!

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1979, the film Over the Edge received a limited theatrical release. Matt Dillon's very first movie followed a group of teenagers living in a planned community called New Granada. With nothing to do in this suburb, the kids turned to substance abuse and petty crime as a way to kill their boredom, but their actions fell on deaf ears, as their parents were too concerned with pursuing wealth to actually understand the reasons why their kids were acting up. Eventually, the kids violently rebeled against their parents and the authorities, in an uprising that resulted in fiery mayhem at the junior high school. The film was inspired by actual events that took place in Foster City, California in the early 1970s, and it was also the inspiration for the music video for the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. Today we have the song Just Inside a Week by the band NEW GRENADA.

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1987, Hüsker Dü played their last ever show in Columbia, Missouri. The band was on tour in support of their Warehouse: Songs and Stories album, and drummer Grant Hart was trying to quit heroin. His bottle of methadone had spilled earlier in the day, but he played the show in Columbia without incident. Still, fellow band members Bob Mould and Greg Norton were concerned that Hart would soon be suffering from withdrawals and wouldn't be able to continue the tour. Hart insisted he could perform, but Mould canceled the dates anyway. Hart quit the band four days later and Hüsker Dü broke-up. Today we have the song Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely by Hüsker Dü.

On this day in 1972, LOU REED released his second solo album Transformer. The album was produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, and it featured what would become some of Reed's best-known songs like "Perfect Day" and "Satellite of Love." The first single from the album, "Walk on the Wild Side", became an international hit, despite its subject matter (it was edited in some countries and banned in others) and it is now generally regarded as Lou Reed's signature song. Today we have the song Vicious from the album Transformer.

Phoning It In Friday

Introducing.... Phoning It In Friday. Phoning It In was a radio show formerly broadcast on WMBR in Boston and then on BSR in Providence. The idea was to have a band or artist play songs over the phone live on the air. It was hosted by Nadav Carmel, Carrie Hadler, James Brandt, and Gabe Miller. Over the years they managed to capture some pretty amazing performances. Occasionally, we'll be featuring some of these performances on Fridays. Today we have JENS LEKMAN playing the song Your Arms Around Me over the phone from his apartment in Sweden. Happy Friday!

MP3 of the Day

On this day in 1872, Captain David Morehouse, spotted the ship, the Mary Celeste, sailing at full sail near the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel was seaworthy, its supplies were untouched, but not a single person was onboard. On November 7, the Mary Celeste sailed from New York harbor for Genoa, Italy, carrying Captain Benjamin S. Briggs, his wife and two-year-old daughter, and a crew of eight. After Captain Morehouse sighted the vessel on December 4, he and his men boarded the ship to find it abandoned. The last entry in the captain's log showed that the Mary Celeste had been nine days and 500 miles away from where it was eventually found. Apparently, the ship had been drifting toward Genoa on her intended course for 11 days with no one at the wheel to guide her. Captain Briggs, his family, and the crew of the ship were never found, and the reason for their disappearance was never determined. Today we have the song (My Girl's Got) Miraculous Technique by BELLE AND SEBASTIAN. The song was recorded for the John Peel show (on the BBC) in 2001, and never made it on to a subsequent album.

The band filmed the video for the single "Radio Free Europe" in Finster's Paradise Gardens in Summerville, Georgia in 1983. The following year, Michael Stipe and Finster collaborated on a painting for the cover of their second album Reckoning. In 1985, the band recorded the song "Maps and Legends" as an homage to Finster on their third album, Fables of the Reconstruction. Finster (and his art) also appeared in the video for the song "Shiny Happy People." Howard Finster died on October 22, 2001. Today we have an interview with PETER BUCK (from R.E.M.) where he talks about Athens, GA, early R.E.M. recordings, and the "Radio Free Europe" single.
