On this day in 1971, The Who released their fifth studio album, Who's Next on MCA. In 1969, Pete Townshend had started writing songs inspired by his experiences on the Tommy tour. These new songs were part of a science fiction rock opera he called Lifehouse. Townshend adapted an ARP synthesizer and a quadraphonic PA to create a system capable of generating and combining music themes written from computerized data. He hoped these thematic components would merge to form a "one note" or a "universal chord" that would represent the audience. He called this the "Lifehouse Method." After two years of work, the ambitious Lifehouse project was finally abandoned, and many of the songs were compiled to create a more traditional rock album titled, Who's Next. On this day in 2003, the last 'old style' Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the assembly line in Puebla, Mexico. The Beetle had been in production for over 65 years, and this last car was immediately shipped off to Volkswagen's museum in Wolfsburg, Germany. First String Teenage High... out Today!

Unchikun Records is digitally re-releasing the Tullycraft tribute album, First String Teenage High: The Songs of Tullycraft Played By People Who Aren't TODAY! This limited edition album was originally released on AAJ & Bumblebear Records back in 2003, but it has been out of print for a number of years now. The album is available for download via Amazon, Rhapsody, and eMusic. It will be available on iTunes on Friday, July 31st.

On this day in 1996, The Crabs, Tullycraft, Rocketship, Incredible Force of Junior, and Poundsign played a show at an all-age venue called Stage 4 in Portland, OR. On that day, no one could have predicted that Chris (from Incredible Force of Junior) would eventually join Tullycraft, and Rocketship would only release one good album. Today we have the song Debutante by THE CRABS from the album, What Were Flames Now Smolder.

Phoning It In Friday!

Today we have another installment of: Phoning It In Friday! Phoning It In is a radio show broadcast formerly on WMBR in Boston, WELH in Providence, and now KDVS in Davis. The idea is to have a band (or artist) play songs over the phone live on the air. The show has been hosted by Nadav Carmel, Carrie Hadler, James Brandt, and Gabe Miller. Over the years, they have recorded some pretty amazing performances. Today we have DARREN HAYMAN (Hefner, The French) playing Gabriel In The Airport over the phone from his home in London, England. On this day in 1933, Wiley Post became the first person to fly solo around the world traveling 15,596 miles in 7 days, 18 hours and 45 minutes. Fifty thousand people greeted him on his return, and he was given a ticker-tape parade in New York City. Tobi Vail was born on this day in 1969 - the same day as the first moon landing. She started the band The Go Team! with Calvin Johnson and recorded one album with Some Velvet Sidewalk, but she is probably best known as the drummer for Bikini Kill. She has played in many other bands including: The Frumpies, The Old Haunts, and Spider and the Webs. Today we have the song Whatshisname Hearts The Frumpies by THE FRUMPIES.

On this day in 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio failed to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, which brought his 56 game hitting streak to an end. The streak had captivated the nation for two months (May 15th - July 16th). The 56 game record still stands today, and many believe it will never be broken. On this day in 1969, the Apollo 11 was launched from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida. It would be the first manned space mission to land on the moon. Today we have the song Moonshot by DEAN WAREHAM.

On this day in 1965, Joan Rivers married Edgar Rosenberg. Rivers worked as a comedian for years and her husband was a favorite topic of her comedy routines. On August 14, 1987 Edgar committed suicide. Today we have the song Career Suicide by DOG DAY.

TULLYCRAFT TUESDAY

On this day in 1965, the film, How To Stuff A Wild Bikini starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon was released in the US. Avalon's role was reportedly minimized as "punishment" after he asked producers for more money than they were willing to pay. He only appeared on screen for about six minutes. The movie is notable as it features the only big screen appearance by The Kingsmen. Today we have the song Wild Bikini performed by THE SALTINE CRACK WHORES. On this day in 1994, the first every Yoyo A Go Go festival was in full swing. The five day festival took place at the Capitol Theater in in Olympia, WA (July 12th - 16th). A ton of amazing bands played including: The Softies, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Halo Benders, Mecca Normal, Heavens To Betsy, The Crabs, New Bad Things, Cub, Unwound, Versus, The Spinanes, and Beck. In addition, the festival would feature the last ever live performance of my first band Crayon. It would also be the last time ex-Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would perform together. They played with The Stinky Puffs - a band led by seven year old Simon Fair Timony, the stepson of Jad Fair. Today we have the song Apple by SOME VELVET SIDEWALK from the 1994 Yoyo A Go Go festival.

On this day in 1965, the Rolling Stones single, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" reached #1 on the Billboard singles chart. The band had been releasing singles since 1963, but this was their first #1 hit in the United States. Today we have the song You Can't Change That Boy by WAKE THE PRESIDENT. Happy Friday!

The British version of The Office first aired in on BBC Two on this day in 2001. The show was created, written, and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. There were only 14 episodes in total - two seasons of six, and a two-part Christmas Special. We actually re-watched the Christmas Special last weekend and it was brilliant. Today we have The Hurt On Her by CHEAP RED, the new band that comprises of Stewart & Jen (Boyracer) and Akina & Arland (Kanda).

On this day in 1981, the Go-Go's released their debut album, Beauty and the Beat on IRS Records. It was the first album written and performed entirely by an all-girl band to top the Billboard 200 chart. It peaked at number one, and remained there for six consecutive weeks. Today we have the song Our Lips Are Sealed by FUN BOY THREE.

On this day in 1946, Howard Hughes piloted an XF-11 prototype reconnaissance airplane on its maiden flight. An oil leak caused the plane to suddenly lose altitude, and it crashed into a house. Howard Hughes was nearly killed in the accident. The Army had originally ordered one hundred XF-11 planes for photo reconnaissance. The order was cancelled, leaving Hughes with only the two prototypes he had designed. Today we have the song The Morning of Our Lives by JONATHAN RICHMAN from The Lost Album (1981).

Over the years there have been a number of different Tullycraft buttons produced. Some were designed for specific events or shows (including the button for the SF Popfest show in May). On one (or two) occasions we even brought a button press to the venue and encouraged folks to personalize their Tullycraft button. Here are a few of the buttons I found around my house. On this day in 1953, the film, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. was released. The movie is perhaps best known for being the only feature film ever written by Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss). At the movie's Hollywood premiere it was reported that some audience members walked out after only 15 minutes... and box office receipts were equally disappointing. Despite this, over the years the film has gained a cult following. I saw this movie on television when I was a kid and it actually kinda scared me (no joke).
